Whether you are planning a first date, a marriage proposal or just a way to say “I love you,” San Francisco is arguably one of the world’s best backdrops. From candlelight to pillow fight, this guide will give you hints on ways to woo your significant other, spouse, or love interest in the 7X7 without leaving your wallet broken-hearted. Starting with daytime date ideas first, why not try some of my favorites:
- Cable Cars to Make the Heart Go “Ding”
- Amoré in the Great Outdoors
- A Walk on Cloud Nine
- A Pillow Fight?
- Candlelight & Cuisine
- Movie Night in the Park
- Dark Corners for Canoodling
Grab your special someone hand and jump on a real cable car at the Powell & Market Streets turntable. Hold on tight (to each other) as you get whisked up and away to Nob Hill. Bring $10 cash.
SF is home to many parks, but we recommend two for their penchant for providing places to picnic and peck: Golden Gate Park, with its hidden trails and alcoves and Stern Grove, an enchanted glen serving up serious doses of serotonin.
While nothing may be more breathtaking than bouts of intense eye contact, take a break and soak in stunning views at Coit Tower or Twin Peaks. For an added shot of the butterflies, ride the glass elevator at the Westin St. Francis or take a walk in the clouds on the 39th floor of the San Francisco Marriot Marquis. It’s called The View for a reason.
To help ease any awkward silences, make your way to Embarcadero Square and wait for the clock to strike 6 p.m. Then, let the feathers and adrenaline fly. Just make sure you don’t lose your loved one to the sea of fluff and frenzy. (Bring goggles.)
If you’re looking for delectable dishes, a solid wine list, and a little candlelight, Fino in the Tenderloin or Zarzuela in Russian Hill are romantic restaurants in SF that hit the spot without hitting your bank account.
After the citrus hues of sunset are gone, grab a blanket or two, some sangria and your sweetheart and head to Dolores Park or Union Square for some outdoor, free movie action. Bring an air mattress or inflatable raft to create your own VIP seating.
End the evening on a love high note with dancing and drinks at The Make Out Room in the Mission, or get to Noc Noc, where “you will probably start making out with someone in a dark corner,” according to yelper Autumn K. So whether you’re looking for a San Francisco romantic getaway or affordable (OK cheap) romantic spot for a date in SF, let this list guide you on your quest for fun and romance in the city.
