Bored? Things to do at and Near the San Francisco Airport

Waiting around an airport for your flight that’s not taking off for several hours is always a million laughs. Thankfully, San Francisco International Airport is chock full of attractions and things to do to help you pass the time. First, there are the shopping options that range from Burberry, Brookstone, and Coach to Pacific Outfitters and Harmony Health & Beauty. You’ll also encounter a wide array of newsstands and bookstores. Restaurants are plentiful as well. Choices include Andale Mexican Restaurant, Gordon Biersch, and Lark Creek Grill. If you prefer food on the run, fast food joints like Burger King and Subway abound. There are also bars, cafés, a Starbucks, and several spots to satisfy your sweet tooth like See’s Candies and Ghirardelli Chocolates. For those looking to stimulate their mind and/or body, SFO has got you covered. The SFO Museum offers an array of changing exhibitions throughout the various terminals that cover a wide range of subject matter, including popular culture, anthropology, decorative arts, and, of course, aviation. You can explore more aviation at the Aviation Museum, see tons of fun sea creatures at the aquarium, and even stretch your tired body at the Yoga Room. Kids even have a place they can expend that pent up energy while Christian Scientists can find solace in a reading room.

If you’ve got a really long layover, you can venture out of SFO for an excursion. Many of the area’s attractions are family-friendly (not to mention wallet-friendly). Covering 670 acres on San Francisco Bay, nearby Coyote Point Park delivers a host of nature-related things to do. Scenic trails are ideal for walking or biking. Large and small picnic areas await those who seek fresh air and a break from airport food. And if the weather is less than perfect, there’s also an indoor option at Coyote Point Park. CuriOdyssey is a museum that focuses on the environment and wildlife, boasting various habitats, an aviary, and lots of cool hands-on exhibits. The town of Burlingame is just down Highway 101 and it features lots of great shops, restaurants, and entertainment destinations like GoKart Racer. Kids 12-17 can get behind the wheel of a race car after finishing an onsite driving school course. In addition, there’s non-racing activity galore at the Laser Maze Challenge.
